Gareth Pugh FW2014

Gareth Pugh has long been a designer with an interesting esthetic. We’ve followed him a few seasons and are always intrigued by what he sends down the runway. This time around it looks like he grabbed a space blanket. You know, the one that runners will wrap up in immediately after finishing a race to keep their body temperature regulated. (Marathons cause your body to lose heat incredibly quickly once you stop running, so the blanket is there to keep what little heat you have from escaping.) Space blankets, also known as mylar blankets were first developed by NASA to be used by astronauts. (See below.)

Foil Blanket

Considering NASA created the first foil blankets, maybe there was an astronaut influence? There definitely seems to be some futuristic, almost alien silhouettes happening in this collection. Other textures mimicked plastic bags and plastic shower curtains. Maybe it’s a little post-apocalyptic survival mode? Maybe Pugh watched the movie Gravity? Either way, the collection was true to his nature – he pushes you to accept the outer limits of fashion.

This time we ended up in space.
